Lowercase v
Uppercase V
Three distinct V shapes
V with a tilde
Ṽ and ṽ place a wavy mark above V. The tilde belongs to the character. An ordinary V followed by ~ puts two separate characters beside each other.
V with a dot below
Ṿ and ṿ have a dot underneath. Look below the point of the V when checking a small sample. A full stop after the letter is not the same mark.
V with a hook
Ʋ and ʋ are V with hook. Lowercase ʋ may resemble u in some fonts, but it has its own character code. Match the character name or Unicode value if the shape alone is ambiguous.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type v with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked v has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ṽ, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ṽ with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 1E7D is the hexadecimal value for ṽ. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 1E7D, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ṽ.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
