Z with accents and marks: copy and paste
Find Z with an acute accent, a dot or a v-shaped caron. Compare ź, ż and ž before choosing: the marks are small, but the characters are different.

Match the mark on Z
Three common shapes above Z
Ź and ź have an acute accent. Ż and ż have a dot above. Ž and ž have a caron. When copying a name, keep the exact mark instead of choosing another accented Z.
Dots and lines below
Ẓ and ẓ have a dot below, while Ẕ and ẕ have a line below. Neither is made by typing punctuation after Z. Copying the character keeps the mark in the correct position.
A stroke is part of the character
Ƶ and ƶ are Z with stroke. They have separate Unicode values from ordinary Z and z, even though some handwriting styles also draw plain Z with a line. Check which character your source requires.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type z with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked z has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ž, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ž with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 017E is the hexadecimal value for ž. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 017E, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ž.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
