Acute, grave, circumflex and two dots

Ú has an acute accent, ù has a grave accent, û has a circumflex, and ü has a diaeresis. Their capital forms are Ú, Ù, Û and Ü. Keep the original mark when copying a word or name.

A line, ring, curve or double acute

Ū and ū have a macron, Ů and ů have a ring, and Ŭ and ŭ have a breve. Ű and ű have two acute strokes; those are lines, not the dots on ü.

U with more than one mark

The forms ǘ, ǜ, ǚ and ǖ combine two dots with an additional mark above. Other forms, such as ứ and ự, include a horn. Look at the entire character before selecting a close-looking alternative.

Check the label before using a number from this table. ALT entries are Windows keypad shortcuts. A “Unicode decimal” entry identifies the character but is not a standard ALT shortcut. Use the copy button or the Word method for those forms.

How to type u with an accent on Windows

Using a numeric keypad

To enter ú, use Alt + 0250 with compatible Western Windows settings. Include the leading zero and check the result, since support depends on the app and system configuration.

• Place the cursor in your text and turn on Num Lock.
• Hold down the ALT key.
• Type 0250 on the numeric keypad, not the number row above the letters.
• Let go of ALT. The expected character is ú.

Type ú with Alt + X in Word

In Word for Windows, 00FA is the hexadecimal value for ú. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.

• Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
• Type 00FA, without the U+ prefix.
• Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
• Check that the code has become ú.
