Marks above and below R
Acute accent or caron
Ŕ and ŕ have a single acute stroke. Ř and ř have a v-shaped caron. Copy the form shown in your word; the two marks identify different characters.
A dot in the right place
Ṙ and ṙ have a dot above, while Ṛ and ṛ have a dot below. Ṝ and ṝ combine a dot below with a macron above. Look at both ends of the letter to avoid leaving out a mark.
Other R forms
Ŗ and ŗ carry a cedilla, and Ṟ and ṟ have a line below. You will also find forms that change the stem or leg of R. The names beside the buttons and the Unicode table help you match those less familiar shapes.
Select a character above and wait for the copy confirmation. Paste into your text with Ctrl + V on Windows, Command + V on Mac, or your phone’s Paste command. For a whole name or sentence, use the online accent keyboard. You can also browse all accent letters from A to Z.

How to type r with an accent on Windows
Using a numeric keypad
Not every marked r has a standard Windows ALT shortcut. For ř, copying is the most direct option here. In Word for Windows, you can also use the hexadecimal method described below.
Type ř with Alt + X in Word
In Word for Windows, 0159 is the hexadecimal value for ř. Alt + X converts that value into the letter, without requiring a numeric keypad.
- Put your cursor at the insertion point in Word.
- Type 0159, without the U+ prefix.
- Highlight only the code, then press ALT + X.
- Check that the code has become ř.
See Microsoft’s character-code instructions for details about code entry. For other characters, browse the ALT code directory.
On a Mac, phone, or tablet
On a Mac, try holding a letter key in an app that supports the accent menu. If the form you need is missing, copy it here and paste with Command + V. On a phone or tablet, select a character and use your destination app’s Paste command. See Apple’s accent guide for Mac options.
